Hiring a senior leader for China/APAC is not a recruiting task—it’s a strategic business decision with measurable outcomes.
Why pre-search alignment matters
Most failed searches don’t fail in sourcing. They fail because the leadership team never aligned on what ‘success’ looks like in the role.
CEO checklist (use this before you engage any search partner)
Define the business problem the role must solve (growth, turnaround, integration, localization).
Agree on 3–5 measurable success metrics for the first 12–18 months.
Clarify decision rights: who owns the final call, and who influences it.
Align on the operating model: HQ vs China autonomy, reporting lines, and escalation paths.
Set non-negotiables vs trainables (market access, regulatory experience, language, leadership style).
Confirm compensation philosophy and relocation/commute realities.
Define the onboarding plan and what support the leader will actually get.
What to ask your search partner
How do you pressure-test the role definition with stakeholders?
How do you evaluate ‘fit’ across HQ and China leadership expectations?
How do you de-risk the first 90 days post-hire?
If you want a search that delivers outcomes—not just a hire—start with alignment.
